Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University Hosts National Orchid Expert to Discuss Biodiversity, Conservation, and Its Utilization Potential

Denpasar, May 27, 2025 – The Faculty of Agriculture at Udayana University held another special guest lecture by inviting national botanical expert Dr. Destario Metusala, M.Sc., a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Dr. Destario is widely recognized for his contributions to orchid taxonomy and conservation in Indonesia. The event was organized by the Undergraduate and Master's Programs in Agroecotechnology and took place in the Senate Meeting Room at the Sudirman Campus in Denpasar.

In the lecture themed “Orchid Diversity, Conservation, and Its Utilization Potential,” Dr. Destario presented the richness of Indonesia's orchid species, which exceeds 4,200 – making the country the most orchid-diverse nation in the world. He also emphasized that much of Indonesia's orchid potential remains untapped, while countries such as Japan, the Netherlands, and Taiwan have already been utilizing it economically and technologically.

Dr. Destario’s presentation covered crucial topics such as the threat of orchid extinction due to habitat destruction, the importance of population assessment for conservation, and innovative uses of orchids ranging from ornamental plants, food, cosmetics, to pharmaceuticals. He also showcased real case studies from his research across various regions, from Sumatra to Papua, highlighting the alarming condition of Indonesia’s orchid ecosystems.

“We often forget that we are a country blessed with extraordinary biodiversity. While other countries are seriously tapping into this potential, we are still lacking in initiative,” Dr. Destario stated in his compelling presentation, which captivated hundreds of attendees including students, lecturers, and researchers.

Beyond inspiration, the guest lecture served as an educational forum on the importance of sustainable conservation approaches. One of the event’s highlights was the encouragement given to students to get involved in research, orchid cultivation, and sustainable orchid-based enterprises.

The event, which began at 2:00 PM WITA, concluded in the late afternoon with an interactive discussion session and a call from Dr. Destario for Indonesia’s young generation of agricultural professionals to take a more proactive role in preserving and advancing the nation's floral wealth.
